FAQ

Web proxies: questions

Can't find the answer? A real person is on chat around the clock, or find us here:

A website that loads another website for you. You paste a URL into its box, its server fetches the page, and you see it inside the web proxy's own site, so the target site sees the proxy's IP address instead of yours. Nothing is installed, and it only covers the tab you use it in.

It depends on the service, which is why each review quotes what its privacy policy says it logs and keeps. Every page you open passes through the operator's server, so anything you type, including passwords, is visible to it. Avoid logging in to accounts or entering payment details through a free web proxy.

A web proxy works inside one browser tab and needs no setup. A VPN is an app that routes all of a device's traffic through an encrypted tunnel. A VPN covers more, but you have to install it and usually pay for it.

Not well. A web proxy is a web page made for a person clicking around, so a scraper or app can't connect through it the way it connects through a proxy gateway, and free tiers often cap time or bandwidth. For automated or high-volume work, a residential proxy gives you a host, port and credentials to use in any tool, with IPs from real home connections.
