What SEO proxies are for
An SEO proxy is an IP address you route search queries through so the results come back as a real searcher would see them, from the location you choose. Search results are personal and local: the same query returns a different map pack in Chicago than in Dallas, different shopping results in Germany than in the UK, and sometimes different organic positions on a mobile carrier than on a home connection. A rank tracker that asks from one data-centre address sees none of that.
Proxies also spread a large keyword set across many addresses. Search engines limit how many automated queries a single IP can make, so a team tracking thousands of keywords across dozens of locations either rotates addresses or gets throttled and challenged.
Which proxy type to use
Residential proxies are the default for search work. They are real household connections, so queries look like ordinary visitors and can be targeted down to a city. Rotate a new IP per query for broad tracking; that keeps any single address well under the rate a search engine notices.
Datacenter proxies are fast and cheap, but search engines recognise datacenter ranges and challenge them quickly, so they suit SEO jobs that don't touch the search engine itself: crawling your own site, checking competitors' pages, fetching robots.txt and sitemaps. Premium residential, the highest-trust slice of our pool, is for when standard residential starts drawing challenges at your volume. Mobile proxies sit behind carrier-grade NAT shared with thousands of subscribers, which makes them the most trusted addresses there are and the right choice when the question is how results look on a phone network.
Local rank tracking, done properly
For local SEO the location of the IP matters as much as the query. Target the city the business serves, keep the language and country parameters of the search consistent with it, and run each location as its own job. City targeting is included on every SerpProxies plan, across 1,400+ cities in 195+ countries, so a multi-location client can be checked from each of its markets.
When a check needs several pages of results, or a sequence of related queries, hold a sticky session — 10 minutes, 60 minutes or longer — so the whole check comes from one visitor instead of jumping between addresses mid-way.
Proxies or a SERP API?
A SERP API is a service that runs the query for you and returns parsed results; you pay per request. Proxies are the network layer underneath: you run your own scraper or rank tracker and pay for the traffic. SerpProxies sells proxies, not a SERP API. If you already use a rank-tracking tool that accepts proxies, or run your own scraper, proxies are usually far cheaper per query. If you want parsed results without maintaining a scraper, a SERP API is the simpler tool.
Either way, check the terms of the search engine you query and keep request rates reasonable. Our acceptable use policy sets out what the network may and may not be used for.
