# What Is a Residential Proxy?

A residential proxy routes your requests through a real home internet connection, so websites see an ordinary visitor. How it works, where the IPs come from, why consent matters and what it's used for.

The short answer

A residential proxy is an intermediary that sends your web requests out through an IP address an internet provider has assigned to a home. The website you reach sees a normal household visitor in the location you chose, not your own IP or a server. They are used where sites block datacenter traffic or show different content by location.

## How a residential proxy works

You connect to the provider's gateway with a username and password (or from a whitelisted IP), and include your choices — country, city, session length — in the username. The gateway picks a residential exit node that matches, forwards your request through it, and returns the response. To the website, the request came from that home connection.

- Your client → the provider's gateway (authenticated).
- Gateway → a residential exit node matching your targeting.
- Exit node → the website, which sees the household IP.
- The response travels back the same way.

With rotation on, every request can leave from a different home. With a sticky session, the same exit IP is held for a set time — useful when a task has to log in or page through results as one visitor.

## Where the IP addresses come from — and why consent matters

Residential IPs belong to real people's connections, so a provider has to source them: typically through apps and SDKs whose users agree to share idle bandwidth, sometimes in return for a paid feature or payment. The ethical line is informed consent — the person knows their connection is used and can opt out.

The line matters in practice. In July 2026 the FBI seized the domains of residential proxy provider NetNut, and Google and other researchers alleged that part of its exit-node pool overlapped with a botnet of compromised devices; NetNut's parent company said it was investigating possible misuse by third parties. When choosing a provider, look for a stated consent basis. SerpProxies' residential IPs are consented and opt-in.

## What residential proxies are used for

- Web scraping of sites that block datacenter ranges — retail, travel, real estate.
- SEO and SERP tracking from specific cities.
- Price monitoring across regions.
- Ad verification and brand protection from inside each market.
- Managing accounts that need a consistent, real-looking identity.

They are not a privacy tool for everyday browsing, and they don't make an activity legal that otherwise isn't — the site's terms and local law still apply.

## What to check before buying

- Consent: does the provider state how its residential IPs are sourced?
- Targeting: is city or ASN targeting included, or an extra fee?
- Billing: pay as you go or monthly; does unused traffic expire?
- Protocols: HTTP(S) and SOCKS5 — and UDP if you need it.
- Trial and refunds: can you test on your own targets first?

Our residential proxy price comparison sets these terms side by side for the providers we track.

No. A VPN encrypts all of a device's traffic to one server, usually in a datacenter, for privacy. A residential proxy forwards specific requests through real home IPs, usually from software, so websites see an ordinary visitor in a chosen location.

Using a proxy is legal in most countries; what you do through it is what the law and the site's terms judge. See our guide to proxy legality.

Because the IP belongs to a consumer internet provider, so to the website it looks like any other home visitor. Blocking it would risk blocking real customers.

One that changes the exit IP automatically, often on every request, so a large job is spread across many households instead of one.

Usually per gigabyte of traffic, with the rate falling as you buy more. Some providers sell monthly plans whose traffic expires; others, including SerpProxies, are pay as you go with a balance that doesn't expire.
