# How to Set Up a Proxy on Android

Add a proxy on Android in the Wi-Fi network's advanced options, why it needs an IP whitelist instead of a password, and how to check it works.

The short answer

Open Settings › Network & internet › Internet, tap the gear next to your Wi-Fi network, edit it, and under Advanced options set Proxy to Manual. Enter the proxy hostname and port and save. Android's Wi-Fi proxy has no username or password fields, so authorise your network's IP in the proxy dashboard first.

Step by step

## Set it up in 5 steps. Android, about 4 minutes.

1. 1

    ### Whitelist your network's IP

Android's Wi-Fi proxy cannot send a username and password. In the SerpProxies dashboard, add the public IP of the Wi-Fi network the phone uses to your IP whitelist — the IP checker shows it, on that network, before the proxy is on.

2. 2

    ### Open the Wi-Fi network's settings

Go to Settings › Network & internet › Internet and tap the gear next to the network you are connected to. On Samsung phones it is Settings › Connections › Wi-Fi, then the gear.

3. 3

    ### Edit the network and open Advanced options

Tap the pencil (or Edit, or View more on Samsung) and expand Advanced options.

4. 4

    ### Set Proxy to Manual

Change Proxy from None to Manual. Enter the host as Proxy hostname and the port as Proxy port, leave the bypass list empty, and tap Save.

5. 5

    ### Check the address

In Chrome, open serpproxies.com/tools/ip-checker. The IPv4 address it shows should be your proxy's IP, and the location and ISP should match the country you bought. If it shows your own address, the proxy is not in use yet.

## What Android's proxy setting actually does

Where the setting lives, how it signs in, and how to prove it worked — the three things that decide whether an account sees the proxy or your own address.

Where it lives

### Settings › Internet › Wi-Fi › Proxy

Like the iPhone, Android keeps the proxy on one Wi-Fi network. The menu moves between makers — Pixel, Samsung and Xiaomi each name it differently — but it is always under the network's advanced options.

Sign-in

### IP whitelist only

There is nowhere to type a password, so the proxy has to recognise the network instead: whitelist its public IP in the dashboard. Anyone else on that network can then use the proxy too.

Check

### Prove it before you log in

Chrome on Android honours the Wi-Fi proxy; some apps do not. Check the address in Chrome, then check again inside the app if it has a way to show where it connects from.

## Why Android needs an IP whitelist

The Wi-Fi proxy on Android takes a hostname, a port and a bypass list — nothing else. A proxy that asks for a username and password simply fails. The fix is to sign in by address instead: add the public IP your Wi-Fi network uses to the proxy's whitelist, and the proxy accepts the phone without a login.

That public IP belongs to the whole network. Every device on the same router can use the proxy, and if your internet provider changes the router's address, the whitelist needs the new one. A fixed office or home line is the easy case; a café or hotel network is not.

## Using it for social media accounts

Set and check the proxy before the first login, and keep the phone on that Wi-Fi network while the app is open. If an app ignores the system proxy, it is logging in from your own address — check before you trust it.

Everything on the phone shares one proxy, so one phone means one IP. For several accounts with an address each, use several devices, or browser profiles that each carry their own proxy.

## If it does not work

- Nothing loads after saving: the proxy is asking for a login. Check that the network's current public IP is on your whitelist.
- It worked yesterday and not today: the network's public IP changed. Turn the proxy off, read the new address on the IP checker, and update the whitelist.
- There is no Proxy option: it hides under Advanced options, View more or Additional settings depending on the maker. Some managed work phones remove it.
- Chrome shows the proxy but an app does not: that app makes its own connections and ignores the system proxy.

To turn it off, edit the network again and set Proxy back to None.

Android's Wi-Fi proxy setting only takes a hostname, a port and a bypass list. Use IP whitelisting so the proxy accepts your network without a login.

Not in the Wi-Fi settings, which take HTTP proxies only. The same SerpProxies IP works over HTTP, so use that form there.

No. The setting belongs to one Wi-Fi network, and mobile data goes out directly.

Most apps follow the system proxy, but an app can make its own connections. Check the address in Chrome first, and treat any app that bypasses it as logging in from your own IP.

Anyone on the same network can then use the proxy, so whitelist only networks you control, and remove addresses you no longer use.

Edit the Wi-Fi network, open Advanced options and set Proxy to None.
