# How to Set a Proxy in Firefox

Firefox keeps its own proxy. Set HTTP or SOCKS5 in Network Settings, sign in, and give each Firefox profile its own IP. Step by step, with fixes.

The short answer

In Firefox, open Settings › General, scroll to Network Settings and click Settings. Choose Manual proxy configuration, enter the host and port as HTTP Proxy and tick Also use this proxy for HTTPS — or fill in SOCKS Host with SOCKS v5 — then click OK. Firefox asks for the username and password on the first page. Its SOCKS5 does not send a login, so SOCKS5 needs IP whitelisting.

Step by step

## Set it up in 5 steps. Firefox, about 3 minutes.

1. 1

    ### Copy your proxy line

In the SerpProxies dashboard, copy one proxy line — host:port:user:pass. Decide on HTTP (signs in with the username and password) or SOCKS5 (needs your IP whitelisted, because Firefox's SOCKS5 does not send a login).

2. 2

    ### Open Network Settings

In Firefox, open Settings › General, scroll to the bottom to Network Settings and click Settings.

3. 3

    ### Choose Manual proxy configuration

Select Manual proxy configuration. For HTTP, enter the host as HTTP Proxy and the port as Port, and tick Also use this proxy for HTTPS. For SOCKS5, enter them as SOCKS Host and Port, pick SOCKS v5 and tick Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5. Click OK.

4. 4

    ### Sign in when Firefox asks

Load any page. For an HTTP proxy, Firefox asks for the proxy's username and password — enter the ones from the line and tick the option to remember them if you want.

5. 5

    ### Check the address

In the same Firefox window, open serpproxies.com/tools/ip-checker. The IPv4 address it shows should be your proxy's IP, and the location and ISP should match the country you bought. If it shows your own address, the proxy is not in use yet.

## What Firefox's proxy setting actually does

Where the setting lives, how it signs in, and how to prove it worked — the three things that decide whether an account sees the proxy or your own address.

Where it lives

### Settings › General › Network Settings

Firefox keeps its own proxy, apart from Windows and macOS. Chrome and every other app stay on your normal connection, and each Firefox profile can hold a different proxy.

### Username and password

Over HTTP, Firefox asks for the username and password and can remember them. Over SOCKS5 it sends no login at all — whitelist your IP in the dashboard instead.

### Prove it before you log in

Tick Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5, or name lookups leave from your own connection. Then check the address in that same profile before you log in anywhere.

## HTTP or SOCKS5 in Firefox

Both work, and the same SerpProxies IP answers on both. The difference is sign-in: Firefox's HTTP proxy asks for a username and password, while its SOCKS5 proxy cannot send them. If you want SOCKS5, whitelist the public IP of the computer's network in the dashboard first.

## One Firefox profile per account

Each Firefox profile has its own proxy setting, cookies and logins. Open about:profiles, create a profile per account, launch it, and set that account's proxy in its Network Settings. Profiles run side by side, so several accounts can be open at once, each from its own IP.

Profiles separate cookies and proxies, not the browser fingerprint. For many accounts on one platform, an anti-detect browser also varies the fingerprint per profile.

## Using it for social media accounts

Firefox is the simplest way to run a browser account on its own IP without touching the rest of the computer: one profile, one proxy, one account. Set the proxy, check the IP checker in that profile, then log in — never the other way round.

## If it does not work

- "The proxy server is refusing connections": check the host and port, and for SOCKS5 check that your current public IP is whitelisted.
- HTTPS sites go out directly: tick Also use this proxy for HTTPS.
- The IP checker is right but sites still see your location: for SOCKS5, tick Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5.
- The login box keeps returning: the username or password is wrong — copy the line again from the dashboard.

To turn it off, set Network Settings back to No proxy or Use system proxy settings.

Only if you choose Use system proxy settings. With Manual proxy configuration, Firefox uses its own proxy and the rest of the computer is unaffected.

Not with its built-in setting — Firefox's SOCKS5 does not send a login. Whitelist your IP for SOCKS5, or use the HTTP form, which signs in normally.

Create a Firefox profile per account in about:profiles and set a proxy in each one. They can run at the same time.

It sends name lookups through the proxy too, so the sites you visit are resolved from the proxy's location and not from your own connection.

Settings › General › Network Settings › Settings, at the very bottom of the General page.

Choose No proxy (or Use system proxy settings) in Network Settings and click OK.
