# How to Set a Proxy in Chrome

Chrome uses your computer's proxy. Where to set it on Windows 11 and macOS, how Chrome asks for the login, and how to proxy just one profile.

The short answer

Chrome has no proxy fields of its own on desktop: Settings › System › Open your computer's proxy settings takes you to Windows or macOS. On Windows 11, use Settings › Network & internet › Proxy › Manual proxy setup. On a Mac, use System Settings › Network › Wi-Fi › Details › Proxies. Chrome asks for the proxy's username and password on the first page you open.

Step by step

## Set it up in 5 steps. Chrome, about 4 minutes.

1. 1

    ### Copy your proxy line

In the SerpProxies dashboard, copy one proxy line — host:port:user:pass. Windows and macOS set an HTTP proxy here, so use the HTTP form.

2. 2

    ### Open the computer's proxy settings from Chrome

In Chrome, open Settings › System and click Open your computer's proxy settings. Chrome hands over to Windows or macOS.

3. 3

    ### On Windows 11: Manual proxy setup

Under Manual proxy setup, click Set up next to Use a proxy server. Turn it on, enter the host as Proxy IP address and the port as Port, and click Save.

4. 4

    ### On a Mac: Web Proxy and Secure Web Proxy

In System Settings › Network, select Wi-Fi (or Ethernet), click Details, then Proxies. Turn on Web proxy (HTTP) and Secure web proxy (HTTPS), enter the host and port in each, turn on Proxy server requires password, add the username and password, and click OK.

5. 5

    ### Sign in when Chrome asks, then check

Open any page. On Windows, Chrome shows a Sign in box for the proxy — enter the username and password from the line. Then open serpproxies.com/tools/ip-checker: it should show the proxy's IP, country and ISP.

## What Chrome's proxy setting actually does

Where the setting lives, how it signs in, and how to prove it worked — the three things that decide whether an account sees the proxy or your own address.

Where it lives

### Chrome › System › Computer's proxy settings

Chrome reads the operating system's proxy, so the setting lives in Windows or macOS — and every app that follows the system proxy moves to the same IP with it.

Sign-in

### Username and password

Windows stores only the address and port; Chrome asks for the login on the first page and remembers it for the session. macOS keeps the username and password with the proxy itself.

Check

### Prove it before you log in

Because the whole computer changes, check in Chrome and then in anything else you run. One Chrome profile on its own proxy needs a launch flag or a browser that keeps proxies per profile.

## Chrome uses the computer's proxy

On Windows and macOS, Chrome does not keep a proxy of its own. It follows the operating system's setting, so turning a proxy on for Chrome turns it on for Edge, Safari and most other apps on the computer at the same time. That is fine for one account on one computer, and the wrong tool for several.

## One Chrome profile on its own proxy

Chrome can start with its own proxy from the command line, ignoring the system setting. Launch it with --proxy-server="http://host:port" and --user-data-dir pointing at a separate folder, and that window — and only that window — uses the proxy. Chrome still asks for the username and password on the first page.

Each --user-data-dir is a separate Chrome with its own cookies and logins. One folder per account keeps accounts apart, but they still share the computer's fingerprint; anti-detect browsers exist for that.

## Using it for social media accounts

One system proxy means one IP for every account in every browser on the computer. For a single account, that is all you need: set it, check it, log in. For several, give each account a profile with its own proxy — a separate Chrome profile launched with its own proxy, or an anti-detect browser such as GoLogin or Dolphin Anty, where every profile stores its proxy and fingerprint together.

## If it does not work

- No sign-in box and pages fail: on Windows the box appears only on a normal page load — open a plain http(s) site, not the new-tab page.
- The sign-in box keeps coming back: the username or password is wrong, or the line is from a different proxy. Copy it again from the dashboard.
- Some apps ignore the proxy: they make their own connections. Only apps that follow the system proxy change address.
- Chrome is "managed by your organisation": a policy may fix the proxy, and the system setting will not change it.

To turn it off, switch Use a proxy server off on Windows, or untick the proxies on the Mac and click OK.

Yes — start Chrome with --proxy-server and its own --user-data-dir, or use an anti-detect browser that stores a proxy per profile.

Yes, through --proxy-server="socks5://host:port" or the Mac's SOCKS proxy field. Chrome does not send a SOCKS5 username and password, so use IP whitelisting for SOCKS5, or the HTTP form with a login.

Chrome on Android follows the phone's Wi-Fi proxy — see the Android guide.

Turn off Use a proxy server in Windows' Manual proxy setup, or untick Web proxy and Secure web proxy in the Mac's Proxies settings.
